CHAPTER TWENTY

Cade

I can feel Sophie’s eyes on me, but I can’t look at her. I know how she’s going to feel when she finds out I gave up my job. I’m not even sure she knows I made attending physician. I’ve only been in the role a couple of months, and I know she always thought it was my dream. It was, but it isn’t something I would ever put above her.

The elevator doors open, and the three of us walk forward.

“I’m actually between jobs at the moment,” I say when we’re inside the car. “I’ve got some personal stuff going on.”

He presses the button for the first floor and looks down to my and Sophie’s joined hands. “Well, I hope everything works out for you.”

“Thanks.”

We ride the elevator in silence, and he raises his hand in a wave when the doors open on the first floor and he heads in the direction of the ER. Once we’re outside, Sophie stops walking and tugs on my hand.

“You gave up your job?” she asks quietly.

I sigh and pull her around the side of the building, away from the entrance. “I asked for some time off and they said no.”

She frowns. “So you just quit?”

“Yes.”

She shakes her head. “But that guy said you’d just made attending physician. That’s everything you’ve ever wanted.”

“No, it wasn’t. You were everything I ever wanted, and you still are. You and this baby are more important than any job, Sophie.”

“But—”

“No buts.”

“I never wanted you to have to choose between me and your career. That’s why…” She trails off.

“I know,” I tell her softly. “And I know now you did that because you loved me.” I take a deep breath and envelop both of her hands in mine. “I did what I did for the same reason, even if at the time I wouldn’t admit it to myself.”

Her uncertain eyes meet mine. “You still love me?”

“Yes. I’ve always loved you.”

“I love you too,” she whispers.

I pull her against me and wrap her in my arms.

“What does this mean, Cade?” she asks into my chest.

Leaning back, I lift her chin with my fingers so she’s looking at me. “I want us to be together again.”

“You do?” I nod. “Do you think we can make it work?”

“I don’t know, baby, but I want to try. It’s always been you, Sophie. Even after fourteen years. I know what it’s like to live without you, and I don’t want to live like that again.” I slide one of my hands around her neck and my thumb gently strokes her cheek. Lowering my head to hers, I softly kiss her. “Tell me you’re mine again?” I ask against her lips.

“I’ve always been yours, Cade. Even when I wasn’t.”

I close my eyes, and for the first time in fourteen years, I feel whole again. A piece of my soul was ripped away when she left, but having her back in my arms makes everything right again.

“Want to go home?” She smiles and nods.

Slipping my arm around her waist, I pull her against me and guide her back to the car.
